A large part of yesterday was spent updating the blog to WordPress, but I’m glad I made the move. Now I have I realise that Blogger wasn’t really designed to give the user proper control over his or her own blog, particularly if they wanted to host it on their own domain.
I do worry that there are an increasing number of things on the internet that give you pseudo control over what should be your own. Yes, I know that blogger is free in the sense that users don’t pay money, but are we really paying in other ways? WordPress may be the same — I don’t know — but so far it feels like I do have a lot more control.
One of the problems I had yesterday when setting up was that I couldn’t seem to install WordPress because it couldn’t get access to the database. After trying lots of things, I eventually changed the password for the database and this worked. However, the really weird thing was that I changed it to exactly what it was. Computers, eh?
Although I have chosen a theme and modified it slightly, I may go for another theme at some point. I like the simple, clean look of this theme, but it’s not quite flexible enough and it could do with more Widgets.
The only thing I’m concerned about now is that people who link to my blog will now have broken links on their sites or in their favourites and may never find this. If you have found this, please note the new URL, above, and update your links. Thanks.
The importing from Blogger did some strange things, mostly minor, but on the whole I’ve found that my old posts have come through okay.
Now for more blogging. 🙂
Have to say, I liked the previous look a lot. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it was one of the most aesthetically pleasing themes for me. This one is quite nice as well though, and I’m sure it’s just a matter of getting used to it.
I do miss a photo of the author though 😉
As for the broken links, isn’t there any way you could redirect to here from the previous URL?
I felt the dark look was a little gloomy for what I wanted. This isn’t quite ideal, but it’s the closest theme I could find to what I wanted. Even then I had to tweak a little.
I’ll put the photo in just for you. 🙂
I’m not nifty enough to know how to do a re-direct.
Oy, that was fast. Thanks!
Since it’s all your domain I’d think it shouldn’t be too much hassle. Maybe someone better versed in the subject could comment…
In any case, happy blogging.
Although it’s my domain the blog was managed from the Blogger tools and it was a big enough hassle just exporting all the posts.
