Alan Bennett’s diaries

I’m reading Untold Stories at the moment – a book of collected writings by Alan Bennett.  I’m in the section in which sections of his diaries have been printed.  It occurred to me as I was reading them that the tone is a little peculiar.  They read as if they were addressed to a reader other than himself and he must have had a strong idea when writing them that they’d see publication one day.

Another thing that struck me was the way that because of the tone of the writing, they’d be perfectly at home on a blog of some kind.  I know that blogs are like diaries in many ways, but Bennett’s diaries seem like blogs.  It’s probably just the fact that I’m reading them with the benefit of a little hindsight, but they just come over in that way to me.
