Congratulations Rhianna!

Unfortunately, I didn’t win the Writers’ Guild Award. However, a big congratulations to Rhianna Pratchett who wond the award for her script for Overlord. And many thanks for the very kind words in your acceptance speech, Rhianna.

Well done, too, to Andy Walsh who fought our corner when there was the inference that game writing wasn’t “proper” writing. Thanks, too, to Tom Jubert, a fellow nominee, who I met for the first time and it was good to do so. I think we can say that the rest of us came joint second place.

The ceremony was a lot more prestigious than I was expecting and BAFTA was filled with lots of great actors, writers and other TV and film people. Amongst the many there were Lesley Phillips, Rita Tushingham, Prunella Scales, Timothy West, Edward Fox, James Corden (who, with Ruth Jones, won best TV comedy award), Rick Wakeman, David Nobbs, Alan Plater, Andy Hamilton, David Croft and Jimmy Perry.

One of the high points, though, was when I met and chatted with Andy Serkis, the guy who did the acting behind the CGI of Gollum and Kong. It was a pleasure to meet such a genuinely friendly guy.

But as Jeremy Hardy (the host) said, I’ll have to try harder next year. “How hard can it be?” he asked. “It’s only writing, for heavens’ sake. It’s not like you’re trying to cure cancer.” 🙂

Edit: There’s a news piece here, along with a picture of the winner.
