My Eyes, My Eyes...
I think my monitor must be on the way out. I find that I get to the end of the day and my eyes are really feeling the strain. Then today I noticed that it keeps going a little weird, like all the pixels are wiggling about, which doesn't help at all. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good monitor for someone working in the UK? Any help will be most appreciated.

I recommend first making sure you are using the optimal refresh rate. If it has been reset for some reason it might cause these problems.
As for monitor recommendations I can recommend NEC/Mitsubishi. They make superior products at reasonable prices. They do cost a bit more than say Samsung monitors, but in my opinion it is absolutely worth it. Selling computers and accessories it has been my experience that people are satisfied with Samsung, but fall in love with NEC/Mitsubishi.

My current monitor is a Mitsubishi, but it's about four years old. My current favourite is the ViewSonic VX922.
I don't know if this is still so, but Viewsonic actually used to put the second latest Mitsubishi panels in their monitors (this information comes directly from the former Mitsubishi head of sales in Sweden).
The Viewsonic response time is so much faster than the Mitsubishi, though.
Personally I would probably go for an Eizo (expensive I know) or a Samsung if I had to buy a new monitor right now. I have recently bought a new PC, but since my soon to be 6-year-old Nokia 19" CRT monitor still works like a charm I'm staying with it.
I'm not too impressed with the LCD monitors on the market so far and as long as my current monitor works I think I will still wait a couple of years before I take the step. Sure, with just office work you don't need a stellar screen, but since I play games quite a lot and like old adventure games with sometimes very low resolutions today's LCDs aren't good enough for me.
It seems like you can't find a LCD monitor right now that hasn't got some kind of problem that hurts your gaming experience: Contrast, brightness, latency, colours, viewing angels, resolution scalability etc. The display manufacturers are getting there, but I still think it will take a while before they are the level of quality that I want.
I'm guessing you, Steve, don't have the same high demands as I do. Tom's Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/ has some good tests if you want to do some more research before making a choice.
Thanks for the input Mats and the link - I'll check it out.
I read a couple of reviews of the Viewsonic and they both felt it was a good choice for gamers. I read a review of the Mitsubishi monitor that was in my price range and it wasn't so good, Harald. Something about a shiny screen, but perhaps that gives it extra clarity?
Depends what you're buying Steve, I'm sure you know the difference between CRT & TFT in colour wise and some people still use them.
If you can cope with the change then by all means buy a good TFT, BUT! Make sure it has a digital interface, there's no point buying a TFT without one.
Can you actually buy CRTs any more?
You can still buy CRTs, but I don't think they are made in large quantities anymore. I don't really see any reason to buy one anymore though, since now we are starting to see all-around LCDs, like the ViewSonic VP930, that are good or great at all aspects.
Speaking of the VP930 you should read the new 19" LCD test at Tom's Hardware Guide. You can find it at http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/03/27/the_spring_2006_lcd_collection/.
The ViewSonic VX922 you mentioned earlier got a lot of praise for some aspects, especially being the fastest LCD monitor ever. However if I would buy a LCD now I would go for the VP930 because it's so good at everything. The VX922 is maybe not a very good choice if you do a lot of office work and watch movies on your PC. The latter might not be an issue for you though.
Don’t know if you have already bought a new monitor or not, but this new test really shows that ViewSonic is ahead of its competition right now. Then again things change really fast right now.
Thanks for the further information Mats, I'll check it out.
Thank you!
