Are Publishers This Evil?

This article over at JoeUser.com takes an interesting stance.  While I disagree about the impact that piracy has - even a small loss to the pirates can tip a company into unprofitability - directing so much ire at publishers comes across as a little over the top.

While I know that there are many things that publishers do wrong, or at least could do better, suggesting that they are to blame for the demise of the PC market is a little silly.  Consoles are winning out because they provide a simple and effective solution for the customer's need to play games.  Simply plug in all the cables, put the disc in and play.  There's no need for all the faffing around with operating systems, compatibility and the like.  Besides, not everyone really needs a computer.

Love the new blog! It's great timing for me for you to have started this - I'm suddenly very interested in the way this medium works. It's very different to the movies I'm used to working on.

And good luck with the novel - I used my recent spate of relative downtime to write a screenplay, and I'm very glad I did.

Thanks Anthony.

Whenever I tried to write anything remotely serious in my other blog it just didn't seem right, somehow. Whereas here I've been quite inspired to write more. And I've kept to the theme so far.

You might be interested in my article on writing for games and my weekly column (links on the left).

Thanks for the kind wishes for the novel. At the moment there's something missing with the antagonist's motivations, so I need to do work there, but in many ways it's progressing well.

Sorry about the anonymous thing. Perhaps I need to look at using Haloscan again?

And good luck with your screenplay. Is that the one that shooting starts on shortly?

Actually no, but one led to the other. I showed the director (who was teaching at the NYFA with me) my screenplay, he liked the way it was written and ask me to read his, I gave him some notes, he liked them, and he asked me to do a draft. So one led to the other. I hope things like that keep happening, but I think it'll be a while (if ever) that I can make more money by writing than by sound editing.

PS
And I do think it's a bit draconian of Blogger to insist that you set up a blog with them before you can post un-anonymous comments, but I appreciate that it's probably a lot neater than Haloscan from your point of view. Isn't there a danger that it might discourage casual commenters? It's a little daunting being faced with the Blogger registration screen when all you want is to post a few words. I love casual commenters myself.

"I hope things like that keep happening"

I wish they'd happen to me. :)

You're absolutely right about the Blogger tyranny. And about casual commenters. I shall look into things forthwith...
